Language Proficiency

All new learners of English progress through the same stages to acquire language. However, the length of time each student spends at a particular stage may vary greatly.

Listening- process, understand, interpret, and evaluate spoken language in a variety ofsituations

Speaking- engage in oral communication in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes and audiences

Reading- process, understand, interpret, and evaluate written language, symbols, and text with understanding and fluency

Writing- engage in written communication in a variety of situations for a variety of purposesand audiences

Goal 1-

To use English to communicate in social settings. Students will use English to participate in social interaction. Students will interact in, through, and with spoken and written English for personal expression and enjoyment. Students will use learning strategies to extend their communicative competence.



Goal 2-

To use English to achieve academically in all content areas. Students will use English to interact in the classroom. Students will use English to obtain, process, construct, and provide subject matter information in spoken and written form.Students will use appropriate learning strategies to construct and apply academic knowledge.

 

Goal 3-

To use English in socially and culturally appropriate ways. Students will choose a language variety, register, and genre according to the audience, purpose, and setting. Students will use non-verbal communication appropriate to audience, purpose, and setting. Students will use appropriate learning strategies to extend their sociolinguistic and sociocultural competence.
